Sweet Science's Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

What You'll Need:

  • Dry Ingredients:

    • 1.3/4 cups all-purpose flour

    • 1/2 tsp baking soda

    • 1/2 tsp sea salt

  • Wet Ingredients:

    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted and slightly cooled)

    • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

    • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

    • 1 large egg (room temperature for best results!)

    • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Add-Ins:

    •  1/2 cups chocolate chips (we like a mix of milk and dark chocolate, but go with your fave)

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Prep the Oven and Gather Ingredients

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper—this makes for an easier cleanup and a perfect bake.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set this aside. This mixture is where we’ll build that nice, even texture.

Step 3: Cream the Sugars with Melted Butter

In a larger bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Mix until smooth and creamy. This combo of melted butter and sugars is what gives the cookies that rich, caramel-like flavour and a beautifully chewy texture. If you’re mixing by hand, just keep stirring until it looks like a thick caramel sauce.

Step 4: Add the Egg, Yolk, and Vanilla

Next, stir in the egg, extra yolk, and vanilla. This step is essential! That extra yolk makes the cookies softer and gives them that slightly fudgy texture in the center. Stir until smooth.

Step 5: Add the Dry Ingredients

Gradually add in the dry ingredients and mix until just combined—don’t over-mix! Over-mixing can make cookies tough, and we want them soft and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Step 6: Fold in the Chocolate Chips

Here comes the best part! Add in the chocolate chips and gently fold them into the dough. Try not to eat too many, though we understand if you can’t resist!

Step 7: Chill the Dough

This is a quick but important step! Pop the dough in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Chilling the dough keeps your cookies thick and prevents spreading. You’ll thank us for this when you bite into that perfect cookie.

Step 8: Shape and Bake (Our 12-Minute Secret!)

Scoop out about 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie onto your baking sheet. Space them out so they don’t bake into each other.

Here’s the Sweet Science secret: bake them for exactly 12 minutes! It may look like they’re not quite done when you take them out, but trust us—those cookies will keep cooking slightly even after they’re out of the oven, giving you that soft, gooey center we all crave.

Step 9: Cool and Indulge

Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes (if you can wait that long!). Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely, or just dig in while they’re warm. Nothing beats that first bite of a melty, warm chocolate chip cookie.
